My wife and I went to Vision New England in Boston on Thursday to hear Ed Young Jr. talk. He was awesome. He did an all day three session seminar on Creative Leadership. I got the opportunity to talk with him for about 10 minutes and get some books signed. I also got to talk with his wife Lisa for about 15 minutes. They were the most down to earth, approachable, cool people I have met in a long time. Let me give you some highlights of what he shared.
The whole first session was about the Power of They. Or as he called it The Sway of They. He shared about how people will come to him in the church and start saying things like, "They said" or "They all want". Ed said there are two kinds of "Theys", the wrong and the right. The wrong Theys are want's based and are concerned more with horizontal things. Whereas the right Theys are needs based and they are concerned with vertical things. The question he posed to sum up his talk was "What did they influence you to do that you would not have done if they had not been around?" Awesome question.
In the second session he talked about questions being the force that creates positive enertia. He talked about some barriers to this which are fear and weakness. He went on to say the right questions to ask are:
-Confirming Something
-Cancelling something
-Copying something
-Creativity
He discussed the importance of hiring the right staff and what to look for in potential staff members.
The last session he went into the 10.5 commandments of creativity. That will be in my next post.
