War of the Worlds

A recent release of H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds" movie has just come out in movie theaters. I went to see it with my wife last week and was blown away by the visual effects and story line. To say the least I am a Sci-fi freak. But what is great about this movie is it has so many spiritual parallels we can draw from it. I plan on preaching a four weeks series by this title and I'm looking for some great ideas.

As of right now some of the subjects I thought of are: Alien invaders: The unseen angels and demons around us. There is a point in the movie when Tom Cruises character Ray, steals a van and the mechanic is trying to get him out while Tom is trying to get him in. It seemed he didn't try very hard to get him in the van. How hard to we try to share our faith in Christ with those who are perishing around us. Another point in the movie Ray makes a decision to kill a man because he is making too much noise. I was thinking about the decisions we make daily that might kill others spirits or our own. Making the right decisions is important. There is power of life and death in the tongue the Bible says.
At the end of the movie a voice explains that it is not the power of man that saved him but of little microscopic organisms that God created that doomed the alien invaders. This makes me think about all the things we try to do in our own strength when God has provided the power we need through the Holy Spirit.

Another thought I had was when Ray had to decide between letting his son go to his death or losing his daughter in the crowd. The thought I had about this is God wants us to let go of things in our lives, that we think if we did it would kill us, in order to grab onto the better things God has for us. I would really appreciate any thoughts you have toward this series. Thanks
