I was laying in my hammock in the backyard today watching my daughter run around. I had a flashback to the days I was her age when I ran around with my sister with boundless energy. It was like I could run forever and not tire. Now I watch my daughter running endlessly back and forth in the yard. She runs in circles around my hammock and I think, boy am I getting old. I'm getting tired just watching her.

I wish time would slow down. I wish there were more midsummer eves to watch and play with my girls. I stare at her to try to burn the images in my mind so 10 or 20 years from now I can look back and see the little girl I adore so much running around the yard again. As much as I want them to grow up and begin their lives away from home, I wish even more that they would never grow up. Forever young. Bob Dylan's song says it all:

"May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young."
My heart beats heavy just to think of it. But this post is about images. My daughter running with her big smile, and even bigger laugh. Her blonde hair waving around as she turns to and fro. Her little legs running as fast as they can to get to where she wants to go.
And I think the one thing that will be burned in my head, and ears for that matter, is her little voice crying out, "Daddy". May those images be forever in my mind.

I know how you feel Joe. My little boy has more energy than my wife and I put together. I just visited a newborn in the hospital on Friday. About the same weight and length our boy was when he was born. I forgot how little he was in the beginning. Now he's shot up over three feet tall. My how the time flies all too fast.
